Hope College is a private, residential liberal arts college located in downtown Holland, which is a city in the US state of Michigan, in the western region of the Lower Peninsula, with a population of more than 34 000 inhabitants, according to the 2008 census, which makes it the the largest municipality of the Holland-Grand Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area, which houses over 260 000 people, within its limits.
Hope was established in 1866 and was founded by Dutch immigrants four years after the community was first settled, first starting as the Pioneer School. It currently offers its students 90 majors that lead to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Hope's athletic teams are known as the Flying Dutchmen, and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the MIAA conference, with 18 men's and women's varsity teams. Their distinctive colors are orange and blue.
